Synopsis

Sodapop is a series of three experimental films involving one scenario shot in the style of different directors. The scenario in this series is a man drinking a coke.

Background

The first two in the series were filmed on Super-8 in downtown Baton Rouge during the summer of 1991 - just outside the City News Stand on North Boulevard. Sodapop Scorsese was shot first - we had just picked up Goodfellas on laserdisc and we ripe with inspiration.

Sodapop Woody was the second one filmed - I guess we figured the opposite of Martin Scorsese was Woody Allen. As has been noted previously:

This film is in black and white - do not adjust your set.

That is not entirely true as we used color stock in 1991. It wasn't until the mid-90s when I was starting to edit digitally that Sodapop was finished as intended with music, titles, etc.

In 1997 - now in Seattle shooting on Video-8 - I had the crazy idea of continuing Sodapop ad infinitum.

In the end, I decided to terminate the experiment with Sodapop Lynch.

Buzz

"... the site also includes some other very adept director parodies, most notably Sodapop, in which the film-makers have taken an ordinary event, in that case someone drinking a sodapop, and filmed it in several different styles. Alongside the black-and-white Woody Allen and the surreal Lynch rendition, the real standout has to be the fantastic Martin Scorsese version - you'd never think drinking a bottle of soda could look so cool."
