Synopsis
Based on family folklore, Fansom
the Lizard is the true story of a pet lizard who travels
from his home in Louisiana to Las Vegas in search of adventure.
This film dramatizes
these adventures of Fansom and is characterized by a vibrant fusion
of hand drawn and computer generated animation. Shot on Super-8.
Background
The film is based on a story that my cousin Rob used to tell about his
pet lizard that has been left for dead under some soft cushions and then
sucked up the vacuum cleaner. His mother explained to him that Fansom
has "run off to Las Vegas" - which he of course believed.
The goal was to create a digitally animated Super-8 film. This was accomplished
by the matted frame, the handheld camera, and the projector sound - but
most importantly the consistent use of the "film-look" filter
in After Effects.
One of the most amazing screenings of any of my films occurred over
Labor Day weekend 2001 when Fansom played at Seattle's
One Reel Film Fest and was projected onto the world's largest indoor
video
screen accompanied by a 48,000 watt JBL surround-sound system at the EMP
Sky Church. I can still feel the bass.
In February 2003, Fansom screened at the 3rd
Tehran International Animation Festival in Iran - supposedly the
film transcends even into the axis of evil. According the
postmarks, the package was return mailed in March - although I did
not receive notice
from the post office that I had a package until June 2003. Upon closer
inspection of the returned package, I noticed in tiny print "Inspected
Pasadena, California, April 2003".

not only witty and wise, but uses digital animation to celebrate the lost
charms of projected celluloid ... with a low-fi look and a hi-fi past,
this is smart and sophisticated animation that draws you right in ...",
