Synopsis

In this allegorical tale of fortitude in the face of temptation, our
protagonist, all too human, struggles against an unyielding and single-minded foe.

Background

Rodney Ascher and I sat next to one another on the way back from a film festival in France. Reflecting on the films we had just seen, we wrote a manifesto for online short films on the back of a cocktail napkin. The rules as we wrote them:

1. No dialogue.

2. No narration.

3. The length of the credits may not exceed one-twentieth the length of the film.

4. Non-verbal human or animal utterances are permitted albeit not encouraged.

5. Must have French subtitles which may not be larger than 1/3 the point size of the English titles.

Booger became the first film that accepted these rules, henceforth known as Dogma 2.0.

A short time later, Rodney unveiled the second film of the movement - Do People Care?.

And with this, the movement stopped and the Dogma 2.0 manifesto was relegated to the ashbin of history.

Filmed in roughly one continuous take on a Sunday afternoon, the film was edited, compressed, and posted to the Internet by dinnertime. A clamor of praise immediately swept in:

"What a masterpiece! Conceptually and stylistically this is your best work!"

"The concept for the film is very interesting. The film itself isn't too terribly interesting but it fits the requirements. I don't really know about this one. I think you should make another movie in the same format as Booger, but have it be 10 minutes long and with a plot."

"It works and it's vile."

I might add that Booger was made while I took a break from animating Fansom the Lizard - who in fact makes a cameo appearance as the "booger".
